Create OmniFocus Tasks with AI on Mac
Let Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor add tasks to OmniFocus on your Mac in plain English. LMCP is a free, local macOS MCP server — no API keys, no cloud.
The create_omnifocus_task tool lets an AI assistant add a new task straight into OmniFocus on your Mac, using nothing but plain language. You describe what you need to remember and the assistant creates it in your real OmniFocus inbox or project. Because writing to your trusted task manager is a real action, the tool requires confirm=true before it executes, so nothing lands in OmniFocus by accident.
A concrete example — you simply type:
- "Add a task to OmniFocus: Draft the Q3 budget proposal, due Friday, flagged."
The assistant parses the title, due date and flag, shows you what it will create, and on confirmation the task appears in OmniFocus instantly. No copy-paste, no switching apps.
Which AI agents work?
LMCP exposes 150+ tools to the AI clients you already use:
- Desktop clients — Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code (GitHub Copilot), Windsurf and Zed auto-configure over local stdio. They talk to LMCP directly on your Mac.
- Web AIs — ChatGPT, Claude.ai, Grok and Perplexity connect through the LMCP Cloud Relay connector, which securely bridges the web client to the server running on your machine.
Whichever you prefer, the same create_omnifocus_task tool is available once LMCP is installed.
Automation
Creating tasks is most powerful when chained with other tools. The AI can read an email with read_email, extract the action items, and create OmniFocus tasks for each one. It can scan your calendar with list_calendar_events and turn meeting follow-ups into tasks. After a Slack or Teams thread, it can capture the commitments you made into your OmniFocus inbox — all in a single conversation.
Context
The assistant works with your real Mac data, not a guess. It sees your actual OmniFocus projects, your live mailbox, your calendar and your contacts. That means a request like "file this under my Work project, due the day before my flight" resolves correctly, because the AI can look up the project name and the flight date from your own data before creating the task.
Productivity
Manual capture is the tax that kills most task systems — by the time you switch apps and type, the thought is gone. With LMCP you stay in the chat: dictate three follow-ups after a call and they are in OmniFocus before you hang up. Triaging an inbox into actionable tasks drops from minutes of clicking to a single sentence. Over a week, that is dozens of context switches you never make.
Privacy & GDPR
Everything runs locally on your Mac. LMCP is a native macOS MCP server that talks to OmniFocus through the same on-device automation Apple provides — no API keys, no cloud account, and no copy of your tasks stored on any server. Your data never leaves your machine. This is privacy by architecture, not by policy: read more in GDPR-compliant by architecture.
