Can the AI write a formula into the cell, not just a value?

Yes. You can ask it to set a cell to a formula like =SUM(B2:B13) and Excel will evaluate it as a normal formula. You can also write text, numbers or dates.

Does excel_write_cell change the rest of my spreadsheet?

No. It writes only the single cell you specify on the sheet you name, then saves the file. Other cells, formatting and tabs are left untouched.

Do I need Microsoft Excel installed for this to work?

No. LMCP edits the .xlsx file directly on your Mac, so it works whether or not the Excel app is installed or open. The file is saved in place when done.
