The safari_go_back tool lets your AI assistant navigate the current Safari tab back to the previous page — exactly like pressing the back button or swiping back, but driven by natural language. It runs through Local MCP (LMCP), a free native macOS server that connects AI assistants to your real Mac apps. A typical prompt is: “Go back to the page I was just on in Safari.” The AI calls safari_go_back and the active tab returns to the previous entry in its history.

This is a read-only navigation action: it only moves the tab in its existing history. Nothing is downloaded, sent, or stored anywhere. Download LMCP to get started in a couple of minutes.

Which AI agents work?

safari_go_back works with every major AI client that supports the Model Context Protocol:

  • Desktop clients — Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code (GitHub Copilot), Windsurf and Zed auto-configure through a local stdio connection. LMCP wires itself in and the tools appear automatically.
  • Web AIs — ChatGPT, Claude.ai (web), Grok and Perplexity connect through the LMCP Cloud Relay connector, a secure bridge to the server running on your Mac.

Either way, the AI ends up calling the same local tool that drives the Safari window on your own machine.

Automation

Going back a page is rarely the whole job — it shines when chained with other Safari and Mac tools. The AI can open a results page, read it, then call safari_go_back to return to the list and pick the next link. Combine it with tools that read the current tab, list open tabs, navigate to a URL, or reload the page to build multi-step browsing flows. For example: “Open each search result, summarize it, then go back and do the next one.” The AI loops forward and back through your browsing history without you touching the trackpad.

Context

Because LMCP runs on your Mac, the AI acts on the actual Safari window you are using — your real tabs, your real history, your logged-in sessions. There is no headless browser or sandboxed copy. The assistant sees what you see, so “go back” means back in the tab you are actually looking at. That shared context across 150+ tools is what makes the AI feel like a true assistant on your machine rather than a disconnected chatbot.

Productivity

Repetitive back-and-forth browsing — research, comparison shopping, reading through a list of links — eats real time. Instead of clicking back, scanning, clicking forward, you describe the goal once and the AI handles the navigation. Pair safari_go_back with page-reading tools and a single sentence replaces dozens of manual clicks. For anyone who lives in a browser doing research, this turns a tedious tab dance into one prompt.

Privacy & GDPR

Everything happens locally. safari_go_back runs entirely on your Mac — no page contents, no history, and no browsing data ever leave the device or get copied to a server. There are no API keys to manage and nothing is stored in the cloud. This local-first design makes LMCP GDPR-compliant by architecture: data you never transmit cannot be leaked or retained by a third party. Your Safari activity stays yours.
