The onedrive_move_file tool lets your AI assistant move or rename a file or folder inside OneDrive on your Mac. Instead of dragging items around in Finder or the OneDrive app, you just describe what you want and the assistant does it. For example, you can type: "Move 'Q3 Report draft.docx' from Downloads into my OneDrive Finance folder and rename it 'Q3-Report-Final.docx'." The AI resolves the source and destination paths and performs the move locally through LMCP.

LMCP is a free, native macOS MCP server with 150+ tools that connect AI assistants to your real Mac apps — Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, OneDrive and more. Everything runs locally on your machine. Download LMCP to get started.

Which AI agents work?

You can use onedrive_move_file from almost any modern AI client:

  • Desktop clients — Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code (GitHub Copilot), Windsurf and Zed auto-configure through a local stdio connection. LMCP appears as a tool server automatically once installed.
  • Web AIs — ChatGPT, Claude.ai (web), Grok and Perplexity connect through the LMCP Cloud Relay connector, which securely bridges the web assistant to the server running on your Mac.

Whichever you use, the file operation still executes locally on your machine — the AI only sends the instruction.

Automation

Moving and renaming files is rarely a goal on its own — it's usually the last step of a larger workflow, and that's where onedrive_move_file shines when chained with other LMCP tools. Your assistant can search OneDrive for last week's exported invoices, rename each one with a consistent date prefix, and file them into a client folder in a single request. It can take an attachment saved from Mail, drop it into the right OneDrive project directory, and then create a Reminder to review it. Because the AI can call many tools in sequence, multi-step cleanups that used to mean dozens of manual drags become one sentence.

Context

The assistant works with your real OneDrive contents on the Mac — your actual folder names, your synced files, your current organization. It isn't guessing from a generic template; it reads the live filesystem through LMCP. That means when you say "move the latest proposal," it can find the right file by looking at what's actually there. Combined with read tools, the AI understands your existing structure before it changes anything, so moves land exactly where you'd expect.

Productivity

Reorganizing files by hand is slow: opening Finder, hunting for the source, navigating the destination tree, renaming with the right convention, repeating. Delegating it to your AI turns minutes of clicking into seconds of typing. For people who process recurring documents — reports, receipts, photos, exports — batch renaming and refiling across folders is the kind of repetitive chore that adds up to hours a month. With onedrive_move_file and a clear prompt, the assistant handles the whole tidy-up while you stay focused on the actual work.

Privacy & GDPR

Every operation runs locally on your Mac. LMCP does not upload your files, copy them to a cloud server, or store anything remotely — the move happens directly on your machine's OneDrive folder. There are no API keys to hand over and no third-party data processor in the loop. This local-first design makes LMCP GDPR-compliant by architecture: your data never leaves your control. The AI sees only what's needed to carry out the instruction you gave it.
