Can ChatGPT Access the Apps on My Mac?

Yes. ChatGPT supports custom MCP connectors — and LMCP is an MCP server that bridges ChatGPT to the native apps on your Mac: Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Notes, Reminders, and more. You ask ChatGPT in plain English (“what’s on my calendar tomorrow?”, “summarize my unread email”) and it calls the right tool on your Mac and answers with your real data.

The key difference from cloud integrations: everything runs locally. There are no API keys, no third-party OAuth into Google or Microsoft, and your data never leaves your machine — ChatGPT reaches your Mac through an encrypted relay you control.

What You Will Need

  • macOS 12 (Monterey) or later — Apple Silicon or Intel
  • ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com) on a Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plan — custom connectors (Developer mode) are not available on the free plan, and the connector must be created on the web (the desktop and mobile apps can use it once it exists)
  • LMCP installed on your Mac (free) — it provides the MCP server and the encrypted Cloud Relay

Step 1: Install LMCP and Turn On Cloud Relay

Download LMCP, open the .dmg, drag Local MCP to Applications, and open it. It appears in your menu bar.

  1. Click the LMCP menu bar icon → SettingsConnect tab.
  2. Enter your email and click Connect — the dot turns green when the encrypted tunnel is up.
  3. Toggle Cloud Data Forwarding to ON, then Copy the Token (you’ll paste it into ChatGPT).

Step 2: Create the LMCP Connector in ChatGPT

On chatgpt.com:

  1. Settings → Apps (formerly Connectors) → Advanced settings → enable Developer mode (one-time).
  2. Create app: Name LMCP, Server URL https://www.local-mcp.com/mcp, Authentication OAuth. Check “I understand” and create.
  3. Click Connect → on the LMCP Authorize ChatGPT page, paste your token and click Authorize.

Step 3: Use It in a Chat

Start a new chat, click + → More → LMCP to enable it, then try:

  • “Using LMCP, what’s on my calendar this week?”
  • “Summarize my unread emails and flag anything urgent.”
  • “Find the Teams thread about the launch and catch me up.”
  • “Read me the OneDrive doc Alex shared last week.”

What ChatGPT Can Reach on Your Mac

  • Mail — list, read, search, send, reply, move
  • Calendar — list events, create, update, delete, check availability
  • Contacts — look up and search
  • Microsoft Teams — read chats and channels (no Graph API, no tokens)
  • OneDrive — browse and read files
  • Notes, Reminders, OmniFocus — list, search, create, complete
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF — read and create documents

Privacy: Your Data Stays on Your Mac

Cloud Data Forwarding is off by default and opt-in per machine. When on, ChatGPT’s request is routed through an encrypted relay to your Mac, executed locally against the native app, and the result is returned — no third-party API keys, no copies stored by LMCP. You can turn forwarding off any time from the menu bar, and disconnect the connector in ChatGPT to revoke access.

Troubleshooting

The connector says “No app actions available yet”

That panel in ChatGPT’s settings does not list MCP tools — it does not mean the connector is broken. Once it shows Connected, start a chat and enable LMCP via + → More → LMCP; the tools work there.

ChatGPT only sees setup_install

Cloud Data Forwarding is OFF. Open LMCP Settings → Connect, toggle it ON, then refresh ChatGPT.

“The connector is not authenticated”

The token is wrong or expired. Re-copy it from LMCP Settings → Connect and paste it again on the Authorize page.
