Read Slack Messages with AI on Windows — No Tokens, No Slack App

Give your AI assistant access to Slack on Windows without creating a Slack app, bot token, or workspace-admin approval. Works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, and ChatGPT. LMCP reads directly from the local Slack desktop cache on your PC.

To read Slack messages with Claude on Windows, install LMCP — a free local MCP server that reads Slack data from the local cache the Slack desktop app already keeps on your PC. No Slack app to create, no OAuth scopes, no workspace-admin approval, no API token — the same read-only mechanism the macOS version uses.

What You Can Access

Through LMCP, your AI assistant can:

  • List your workspaces — every Slack workspace you're signed into
  • List channels — browse channels and DMs in a workspace
  • Read channel messages — pull recent message history from a channel
  • Search messages — find messages across your channels by topic or keyword

This is read-only: LMCP reads what's cached on your machine and cannot post, edit, or delete anything in Slack — on Windows or on Mac.

How to Install

Download LMCP for Windows and install it:

  1. Run the downloaded LMCP-Setup.exe from your Downloads folder
  2. Follow the installer — no admin rights needed, it installs to your user folder
  3. LMCP starts automatically and appears in your system tray

Takes about 30 seconds. Your AI clients are configured automatically.

Then restart your AI client:

  • Claude Desktop — quit completely and reopen
  • Cursor — restart the editor
  • VS Code — reload the window (Ctrl+Shift+P → “Reload Window”)

Make sure the Slack desktop app is installed and you're signed in. LMCP detects your Slack data automatically — no API keys, no app to create.

Example Prompts

  • “Catch me up on my Slack channels from today” — summarizes recent activity
  • “What did the team say in #engineering this morning?” — reads and summarizes a channel
  • “Read Slack messages without an API token” — this is exactly what LMCP does, by design
  • “Did anyone @ me with something I need to act on?” — scans recent messages for action items

Real-World Workflows

Morning catch-up

Prompt — paste into your AI

Summarize everything I missed in Slack overnight across my channels, grouped by channel, and flag anything that needs a reply from me.

Cross-app meeting prep

Prompt — paste into your AI

Check what was discussed about Project X in Slack this week, pull any related Outlook emails, and prep a briefing with open questions for tomorrow's meeting.

Because LMCP also reads your Outlook email, your AI can pull a complete picture across tools.

LMCP also connects your AI assistant to Microsoft Teams, Outlook and OneDrive on Windows. See the full list of guides or learn more at local-mcp.com.

Limitations

  • Only cached messages are available — channels you haven't opened in a long time may not be fully on disk.
  • Read-only — no send, edit, or delete tools exist for Slack, on Windows or on Mac.
  • Requires the Slack desktop app — the browser version doesn't create a local cache LMCP can read.
  • Cache freshness — reflects the last time Slack synced; keep Slack running for up-to-date data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I read Slack messages with Claude on Windows without an API token?

Yes. LMCP reads the local cache the Slack desktop app already keeps on your PC — no app to create, no token to extract, nothing for a workspace admin to approve.

Can Claude post to Slack for me?

No. This is a read-only integration — LMCP can read and search Slack but cannot send, edit, or delete messages.

Does it need admin approval?

No. Because it reads data that's already on your disk, there's no workspace-admin consent to request.
